La Escondida

La Escondida is an "estancia" (farm) situated in the west of the Buenos Aires province in the heart of the Argentine Pampas. Its history includes stories of Indians, soldiers and pioneers who camped by the "hidden" lake - La Escondida - hence the farm's name. The Ranquel Indians who roamed the Pampas were said to have hidden a troop of white horses belonging to General Villages there during the Indian wars.

The polo activities at La Escondida consist of riding lessons, stick and balling in the mornings, and chukkas in the afternoons, up to six times a week. For guests spending two weeks, the Avendano brothers work out a schedule according to the physical fitness of the guest, with breaks scheduled in so that the visitor does not get too exhausted. Everyone gets their money's worth and guests always leave pleased with their stay.

La Escondida is run be Caroline Mary Couper Avendano and her two sons. The Couper Avendano family is directly descended from the original owners who settled in Argentina at the end of the last century. They continue raising crops, cattle, and horses that today are trained as polo ponies and exported to over 14 countries.

At La Escondida you are welcome to take part in the daily life of an Argentine estancia. Guests can go for long walks or rides around the lakes for ideal bird watching. You can also go rowing on these lakes, swim in the pool, and of course, play polo! Even those who have never played will enjoy a game under the expert guidance of Diego and Enrique Avendano.

La Escondida is 4 hours from Buenos Aires on the main highway to Mendoza province and can be reached by coach, minibus, or private transport. Accommodation for guests includes 3 double rooms with en suite bathrooms, or a family apartment for five with its own bathroom. Parties of up to 18 people can be accommodated on request.

The living area includes a big and comfortable sitting room, large dining room, games room, and a television room where open fireplaces are lit in the winter months.

The menus include European and authentic Argentine dishes. At La Escondida, Argentina's famous hospitality is seen at its best. English, German, and Spanish are all spoken. It is an ideal place to spend the night on the way to Las Lenas ski resort or Chile, or for a weekend or family holiday.
