The Maharaja and Maharani's Polo Safari

Sample Itinerary
Our base for the Maharaja's' holiday is Jaipur, the Pink City, where famous English, American, and Indian men and women of the 40's, 50's, and 60's once visited to play and watch the King of Games - Polo. The itinerary also features Udiapur, the Lake Palace city (in the former kingdom of Mewar), the mountain fort of Kumbalgarh, and the desert city of Dundlod, which stables some of India's best Marwari horses.

Day 01: Arrive in New Delhi - Indira Gandhi Int'l Airport. by car to the Imperial Hotel, a heritage hotel with the perfect hospitality of an era gone by.

Day 02: Recover from the flight in the morning. In the afternoon, explore Imperial Delhi Mughal and the British Raj with a local guide, including its old monuments and bazaars.

Day 03: After an early breakfast at 0600am, we drive out on a country road (bumpy but charming!) past small villages and fields. We travel from the state of Delhi through the state of Haryana and into Rajasthan. We come to the city of Alwar, once seat of the Kingdom of Alwar, which like its sister kingdoms of Jaipur and Jodhpur, sent famous cavalry regimental contingents to fight in World War I and II. Some of the State Forces banners can still be seen at the Alwar museum, where we make a brief stop.

We soon reach Sariska Palace, (about five hours from Delhi). The palace was built in the 1930's as a Viceregal Lodge for a visiting Viceroy. Sariska is set amidst beautiful forested hills at the edge of the Sariska Wildlife Park, once the royal hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Alwar.

Day 03-04: We spend two nights camping, or staying at a Fort Palace, making forays into the National Park at dawn and dusk. Nilgai-blue bull, spotted deer or chital, caracal or desert cat, leopard, and tiger are some of the species you can see.

Day 05: We proceed to Jaipur, the Pink City, about two hours away. After lunch at the Trident Oberoi, we drive out for a bit of sightseeing of this wonderful old city with its fantastic forts, palaces and bazaars. Antique shops, the famous Polo Bar at the Rambagh Palace (which has a magnificent display of famous polo photographs), the elephant ride up to Amber Fort, are just some of the experiences and sights here. In the evening we drive to the Bhadrawati Palace -a heritage hotel an hour away from Jaipur.

Day 06:We play at either the warm and friendly Anokhi polo farm or the formal, Colonel Garcha's polo club, depending on your needs and availability. Finely groomed and amongst the best-schooled horses anywhere, you will enjoy your polo sojourn immensely.

Depending on your custom itinerary, we can also use the scenic, warm and friendly polo farm, belonging to Colonel Raj Kalaan, whose two professional +5 goal polo playing sons are available season permitting to give you a run for your money for the rated player.

Days 06-10*: Polo Curriculum covers:
The Polo curriculum is tailored to your needs and individual abilities. It includes theory and practicals on wooden horses and on horseback, swings - rear and forehand, videos, tacking up, and riding off.

We play polo in the mornings and make explorations in the afternoon. Sightseeing includes amazing forts, palaces and museums, the Polo Bar, and an elephant ride up to a mountain fort palace. For those interested, tours to tie dye textile factories and curio shops is also an option. The possibilities are endless! Each evening at the Bhadrawati, local folk artists, dancers, and local bards entertain us.

There is also an overnight safari through villages and open country during your stay.

Day 11: Check out of the Bhadrawati Palace and ride out to Mundota for an overnight hack, staying at a wonderful old fort.

Day 12: Drive back to Delhi to catch flight out.
