Rajasthan
To many, Rajasthan is considered to be one of the most colourful regions of India. Geographically varied, it includes the Thar Desert, the Aravallis (the oldest fold mountains in the world), large areas of semi desert scrub, and wonderful lakes. Replete with forts, palaces, pomp and splendor, India's colourful desert state of Rajasthan offers polo enthusiasts exciting adventures on, and beyond, the polo field.
The India polo holiday itinerary also includes rides through two major former kingdoms - Marwar (whose capital was Jodhpur) and Mewar (whose capital was Udaipur). While most of Marwar is arid and offers the magic of the desert, Mewar is full of hills and lakes. Between these two regions runs the thickly forested Kumbalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary.
Rajput rulers from separate clans governed both the Mewar and Marwar kingdoms. The descendants are proud, fierce and colourful, but their hospitality is excellent. English is spoken in the larger cities, and in the interiors, people speak the local Rajasthan dialect. Alcoholic beverages are freely available and liquor is a part of Rajput tradition.
The Climate
Our Indian polo safaris run in the winter, from October to March, when it is comfortable to travel in the desert. January is cold with temperature lows reaching the freezing level. Daytime, however, is sunny and pleasant, and with the exception of windy weather, a shirt suffices.
In March, the days are warm and a light pullover is normally required at night. The end of March marks the beginning of spring with warmer, summer temperatures starting towards the end of April/ beginning of May. Rain is uncommon during these months, making it a perfect time to holiday.
